A visual identity to research vulnerability, exclusion and loneliness

Research projects need to communicate specialised knowledge rigorously, but they also need an identity that makes them recognisable and helps disseminate their work.

For VESO, a research project by the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, we developed the logo and website design, creating a visual system to support research focused on older people, their rights and the challenges associated with vulnerability, exclusion and loneliness.

Our work focused exclusively on the visual dimension of the project: building its own identity and then transferring it to the digital environment, while respecting the content developed by the research team.

VESO: turning a research project into a recognisable identity

VESO is the acronym for “Older people facing vulnerability, exclusion and loneliness. Civil-law protection mechanisms and proposals from a multidisciplinary approach”, a project that studies protection mechanisms for older people and puts forward proposals aimed at improving their quality of life and wellbeing.

Its research field addresses legal, personal, family, healthcare and social issues, while also incorporating the analysis of unwanted loneliness and measures related to active ageing.

The visual challenge consisted of developing an image capable of supporting an academic and multidisciplinary project with a subject of significant social relevance.

A logo built from the project’s own name

For VESO, we developed a logo based on the project acronym, using a geometric composition that turns its letters into a recognisable graphic symbol.

The visual construction simplifies the forms and gives the name its own personality, making it easier to identify in both academic environments and digital media.

The identity uses versions in black and yellow, allowing the logo to adapt to different backgrounds and communication needs without losing recognition.

The name is also accompanied by the words “Vulnerability · Exclusion · Loneliness”, making the meaning of the acronym and the project’s research territory visible from the very first contact.

A clear visual identity for a complex subject

VESO brings together law, society, health, ageing and the protection of older people.

The design needed to coexist with that complexity without overloading the communication.

For this reason, we proposed an identity with simple, strong forms that make the project quickly recognisable and act as a common thread across its different applications.

The combination of geometry, typography and chromatic contrast gives VESO personality while maintaining the professional and institutional character required by a university project.

Bringing the identity into the digital environment

Once the visual identity had been defined, we developed the design of the VESO website.

The website needed to become the main digital space from which to present the project, its team and the results derived from the research.

Our work consisted of transferring the new identity to the design of the different pages and content blocks, creating a visual experience coherent with the logo and making academic information easier to read.

Design at the service of scientific dissemination

VESO brings together researchers from six Spanish universities and combines profiles linked to Law with disciplines such as Economics, Statistics, Computer Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine.

This multidisciplinary dimension reinforces the need for a digital environment capable of organising diverse information within a single identity.

Design therefore helps give unity to the project, support the dissemination of its results and build a recognisable image around the research.

An identity that connects research and communication

The work developed for VESO connects two essential elements in the communication of an academic project: visual identity and web design.

The logo provides the project with its own graphic language, while the website transfers that identity to a space designed to present the team, organise activities and give visibility to the research results.

At Símbolo IC, we work on design for research projects with the understanding that visual communication is also part of their ability to reach society.
